The Motorway: shining the spotlight on what we do

06 of February of 2015

One of the challenges we have here in the UK is raising public awareness of the hazards faced on a daily basis by our employees who work on the highways.

That’s why I was pleased that Amey was able to support the Highways Agency (HA), one of our key customers, in making the BBC documentary “The Motorway: Life in the Fast Lane”. The documentary looked at how we worked with the HA to keep the M6 moving. It’s one of Britain’s busiest motorways, stretching from Coventry up to the Scottish border, and is relied on by thousands of commuters every day.

We were lucky to work with the award-winning production company, The Garden, who have made other popular documentary series such as 24 Hours in A&E. They spent a great deal of time getting to know our employees and captured how we cope with winter weather, litter and debris and essential road works, as well as some of the challenges we can face when supporting the response to road incidents such as collisions.

I’m very proud of all the employees who took part in filming and did a great job in representing Amey and what we do. Their professionalism shone throughout the series, and I was really pleased to see the positive response from the audience, which reached over 2million viewers.

There were a great deal of comments on Twitter following each episode, and it was clear that messages about road worker safety, and how much planning and preparation we put in to what we do, had hit home. Many said it would make them think more carefully about how they drive through road works.

Reading comments like that is great because our Target Zero campaign – making sure our employees don’t get hurt doing their job – is at the heart of everything we do. It’s a message we’ll continue to promote whenever we can.
